Thirty-four dead as heavy rain, lightning wreak havoc across Uttar Pradesh

At least 34 people died, and dozens were injured as powerful storms accompanied by heavy rain and lightning created havoc across Uttar Pradesh on Thursday (May 22, 2025).
The sudden and intense weather has left a trail of devastation in at least 15 districts. Kasganj and Fatehpur district reported five deaths each while Meerut and Gautam Buddha Nagar recorded four fatalities each. In Bulandshahr district three people were killed while in Auraiya, Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat and Etawah two deaths reported.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the heavy rain-related incidents and instructed officials in the affected districts to provide support to the bereaved families.
Mr. Adityanath directed district-level officials to ensure appropriate medical care for the injured and disburse relief funds for losses of life, both human and animal, resulting from lightning, storms, and rain-related disasters.
Authorities said that most casualties happened due to the falling of trees, lightning strikes, collapsing structures and drowning.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted heavy rainfalls till May 27 across various districts in Uttar Pradesh.
