After days of temperatures above 40 degrees in the national capital, Delhi-NCR experienced a sudden weather change with a dust storm, hailstorm sweeping across the region on Wednesday evening. Many trees were uprooted in Delhi, Ghaziabad and Noida while the cities received heavy rains and hailstroms. The gutsy winds and dustorm were followed by rain and hailstorm.

There is a possibility of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and hailstorms may prevail over the regions of Baghpat, Gautam Buddh Nagar, and Ghaziabad in the next 3 hours.

The The Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued an ‘orange alert’ for several states including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh, with a prediction of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, dust storms, and gusty winds.

As parts of Delhi experienced a gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and hailstorm, trees were uprooted in several areas of the city.

As per the weather department, Delhi recorded its highest minimum temperature of 30.2 degrees Celsius today.

The IMD  has forecasted a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and winds temporarily reaching up to 40 kmph during the thunderstorm, along with dust-raising winds towards evening and night for the upcoming days. 

Many domestic and international flights to Delhi airport from various airports have been halted or diverted due to weather conditions in Delhi.

Indigo informed that its flight 6E 2142 operating from Delhi to Srinagar witnessed sudden hailstorm en route.

“The flight and cabin crew followed established protocol and the aircraft landed safely in Srinagar. The airport team attended to the customers after arrival of aircraft prioritising their wellbeing and comfort. The aircraft will be released post necessary inspection and maintenance,” the airline said in a statement.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) also informed that services have been affected on parts of the Red and Yellow Lines due to overhead equipment (OHE) damage caused by strong winds and rain in the national capital.
