The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has launched “a battle” to get a third term in power for its government in Kerala, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary M.V. Govindan has said.

He was in Kozhikode on Tuesday (May 20, 2025) to deliver a lecture in memory of party veteran M.K. Kelu, popularly known as ‘Keluettan’, on his death anniversary.

Mr. Govindan said Kelu was being remembered at a time when the LDF government in its second term was entering its fourth year in office. “In the next one year, all kinds of scandals and campaigns are likely to be unleashed against our government, like what happened ahead of the 2021 polls. There is an anti-communist media network in Kerala, which will go to any extent to spread lies,” he claimed.

Mr. Govindan alleged that the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) had not been able to launch any major agitations against the LDF government in the past four years. “The only protest worth its salt was against some of the development works proposed by the government such as the semi-high speed SilverLine rail project. It was the same UDF which could not take a firm stand on projects such as GAIL pipeline, national highway widening, and the Vizhinjam port. Is that front going to replace the LDF?” he asked.

Slams Centre

The CPI(M) leader also accused the Union government of neglecting the State’s “legitimate demands and concerns.”

Mr. Govindan alleged that though Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited the landslide-hit Mundakkai-Chooralmala in Wayanad, the Centre did not allocate funds for the rehabilitation works.

He claimed that the State government was arranging “world-class facilities” for rehabilitating the landslide-hit population.
