After Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s remarks on Operation Sindoor were believed to have crossed a ‘Lakshman Rekha’ by his party leaders, the senior parliamentarian is likely to get a key role in India’s global outreach against terrorism in Pakistan, sources said.

Shashi Tharoor May Lead A Multi-Party Delegation For PM Modi’s Diplomatic Push

In a bid to clearly articulate India’s stance on terrorism originating from Pakistan to the international community, the Prime Minister Modi-led BJP government is launching a significant global outreach initiative.

Shashi Tharoor- who is also the head of parliamentary panel on foreign affairs in India- is expected to lead a multi-party delegation across several nations, sources said.

The initiative will see the deployment of multiple delegations, each comprised of five to six Members of Parliament, accompanied by a representative from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and another government official. MPs have been advised to ensure their passports and travel documents are readily available, with the MEA coordinating all travel logistics. The delegation is expected to depart India around May 22 and return in early June, between the third and fourth of the month, sources told CNN-News18.

Shashi Tharoor Snubbed By Congress

Following his public support for Operation Sindoor- which drew disapproval from within his own party- Congress MP Shashi Tharoor clarified his position. Asserting that his remarks reflected his personal stance as an Indian citizen, rather than an official party line, Shashi Tharoor stated, “At this time, at a time of conflict, I spoke as an Indian. I never pretended to speak for anyone else. I am not a spokesperson for the party. I am not the government spokesperson. Whatever I have said, you may agree or disagree with that, blame it on me individually, and that’s fine.”

Emphasising that his comments were personal views articulated during a period when national unity was crucial, particularly on the international stage, he said, “I made it very clear that I am expressing my personal views. It was really a contribution to the national discourse, at a time when it was very important for us to rally around the flag, especially internationally. There was a relative lack of our point of view being heard, particularly in the US, Europe, and the Middle East.”
