The Old Country ditches open world for blood-soaked storytelling

It won’t be long before you can put yourself in the shoes of an up-and-coming foot soldier in the Torrisi crime family, as Mafia: The Old Country now has an official launch date. The latest in the Mafia series, developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games, launches later this Summer. The game offers a fresh spin on gameplay compared to older games in the franchise. That being said, it should still deliver a familiar experience to longtime Mafia fans.

One major change is the world and pacing. Mafia: The Old Country won’t be an open-world game like Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia III. Instead, it will offer a more linear play style with a narrative-driven experience. “Mafia: The Old Country is a focused, linear experience that combines quality storytelling, authentic era immersion, and a refined take on the familiar Mafia gameplay. That focus allows us to deliver a story that’s gritty, grounded, brutal, and emotional. Embracing early 1900s era Sicily, this is a mafia origin story that follows our protagonist, Enzo Favara, as he takes the oath and works his way up Don Torrisi’s crime family,” says studio president Nick Baynes.

If that sounds exciting to you, you’ll be able to dive in and check out the experience for yourself in a few short months.

Mafia: The Old Country will launch on August 8

Hanagar 13 officially confirmed the launch date earlier this week. Noting that Mafia: The Old Country would launch on August 8, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. The studio has since put out a few trailers that hone in on the gameplay and the developer’s insights on various game elements. The official gameplay trailer is about 2 minutes long and serves up plenty of action scenes. Including the use of the many different weapons that the main character, Enzo Favara, will have in his arsenal.

As for the dev insight video, it’s much longer, at close to an hour in length. While that’s not exactly a quick watch, it’s worth it. The video shows off some interesting details about the game’s development while giving an inside look into other areas of the game. For example, you’ll learn a little about the different kinds of knives you can acquire and use throughout the game. All of which will have different attributes and different styles. If you’re planning to play this game when it releases, this video is definitely worth a watch.

This game is obviously coming to consoles. However, consoles also don’t have minimum and recommended specs, since you can’t alter what the consoles have for hardware. For PC players, though, the hardware can consist of a wide variety of different components. The studio has now listed the minimum and recommended specs on the game’s Steam page. So, if you want to play this game at its best, here’s what you’re looking at.

For recommended specs, Hangar 13 says PC players will want at least an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X or an Intel Core i7-12700K for the CPU. The GPU, meanwhile, should be at least an NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti or an AMD Radeon 6950 XT. You’ll also want 32GB of RAM, DirectX 12, and 55GB of free space for the game installation. The studio says this will afford players the ability to set the game’s graphics preset to high with resolution set at 1440p. If you want higher graphics settings than that, then you’ll want to bump those specs up. Preferably to something in the 40-series, like the 4080 Ti Super or above. If you want to max out everything with no issues, then you should be shooting for something in the RTX 50-series. This should allow you to play in 4K.
