The politics over who is responsible for repairing Bengaluru’s battered roads has intensified, with Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya wading into the row.
Surya tweeted a letter written by a school urging parents to write to civic authorities, requesting immediate repairs for the sake of their children.
He also posted a video of an autorickshaw carrying schoolchildren navigating a severely damaged stretch riddled with potholes and open manholes, making it a dangerous daily journey.
“Look at the road condition. There are open manholes here—kids can fall in. Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and buses are unable to navigate. It’s a calamity waiting to happen. Thousands of kids, many in school vans, travel on this road every day. How can they turn a blind eye to this?” the Bengaluru South MP asked News18.
Surya questioned the Karnataka Congress government’s accountability in maintaining the city’s infrastructure, saying the tech capital of India is “crumbling” under their rule.
On Wednesday, after inspecting areas severely affected by incessant rains, Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar claimed that the worst damage was seen in BJP constituencies.
Responding to this, Surya told News18, “Does Bengaluru belong to a particular political party? It was Shivakumar who started the practice of giving funds only to Congress MLAs while denying them to BJP MLAs. Let him make public how many crores were allocated to BJP MLA areas versus Congress MLA areas. Remember how in Jayanagar he deliberately denied funds to the local BJP MLA? You withhold funds from BJP constituencies and then blame those same areas?”
The letter Surya shared was written by the secretary of the Kumaran Group of Institutions. It asked parents to “acknowledge the challenges posed by the condition of roads leading to the school,” and highlighted the inconvenience and risk to students.
The school encouraged parents to directly approach civic bodies: “Should you wish to support the cause further, we encourage you to write directly to the relevant municipal or public works department. A collective voice from the parent community may help highlight the urgency of the matter and prompt swifter action,” the letter said.
The school also clarified that it has repeatedly requested for road repairs, but its role is limited. “The responsibility of repairing public roads lies solely with the municipal bodies,” the letter stated.
Surya emphasised that he was elected to represent all of Bengaluru and should be answerable for the city’s problems. “MLAs don’t have executive powers; those lie with ministers. The irony is, while they celebrate two years of so-called good governance, half of Bengaluru is sinking,” he told News18.
