The Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) has launched a programme to curb accidents across the country. The programme, under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, prioritises high accident-burden zones in 100 districts through an analysis of data of accidents in 17 States. Launched in Delhi on Tuesday, the data-driven hyperlocal intervention approach is tailored to the local needs of each district and aligned with the CoERS’s 5E model of road safety – engineering, enforcement, education, emergency care, and empathy. The MoRTH’s “Road Accidents in India 2022” report states 4,61,312 accidents were reported, resulting in 1,68,491 fatalities and 4,43,366 injuries. While many of these accidents were attributed to human error, a significant proportion is due to localised challenges.
