Remedies trial for Google’s advertising antitrust case is set to begin on September 22

The trial is set to kick off on September 22, a judge has announced. This information was provided during the civil hearing minutes. This follows Google’s defeat in court, which occurred last month. This was announced on May 2, as we knew was going to happen.

As part of last month’s trial, the US District Judge, Leonie Brinkema, said that Google was liable for “willfully acquiring and maintaining monopoly power”. The ruling said that Google held illegal monopolies in online advertising markets.

“For over a decade, Google has tied its publisher ad server and ad exchange together through contractual policies and technological integration, which enabled the company to establish and protect its monopoly power in these two markets,” Judge Brinkema wrote.

The DOJ will look for ways to break Google’s ad monopoly

As part of the Search case, DOJ is requesting a ton of moves by Google. That ncludes the sale of Chrome, which seems like a real possibility now. The DOJ is determined to break Google’s search monopoly, and we can expect serious demands for the advertising remedies trial as well.

It’s not yet clear what that will be, but Google will be required to take serious steps. The company will appeal the ruling after the remedies trial ends. The same goes for its loss in the search monopoly case, actually. Both of these cases will likely go on for quite some time, despite Google’s defeat on both fronts.
