Calling the move a ‘historic stride’, Kamal Haasan said that the caste census is a genuine commitment towards equality.

Actor and founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam, Kamal Haasan, on Thursday welcomed the central government’s decision to approve the enumeration of castes in the upcoming census. Calling the move a ‘historic stride’, Haasan said that the caste census is a genuine commitment towards equality.

Taking to X, Haasan said, “When you count a people, you begin to truly see them. The caste census shall be a historic stride — but only if anchored in a genuine commitment to equality, honouring generations who fought to be acknowledged, not overlooked.”

“Makkal Needhi Maiam has long championed the fight against caste injustice through data-driven policy and a commitment to equal dignity, and it welcomes the Union Government’s announcement yesterday. But we must not repeat 2011, when data was gathered but never released. Truth must see daylight — not languish in sealed files, hidden from the public it was meant to serve,” he added.

Centre Approves Caste Count In Upcoming Census

In a major decision, the Centre on Wednesday approved the inclusion of caste enumeration in the forthcoming Census. The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs amid growing demands for a caste census.

Vaishnaw said that caste census exercises carried out in several states were “unscientific”. He accused Congress and its INDI alliance partners have used the caste census only as a “political tool”.
